Serving God — Nicole Barreiro

Numbers 4:4-15a

S This is the work of the Kohathites in the Tent of Meeting: the care of the most holy things. When the camp is to move, Aaron and his sons are to go in and take down the shielding curtain and cover the ark of the Testimony with it. Then they are to cover this with hides of sea cows, spread a cloth of solid blue over that and put the poles in place.

Over the table of the Presence they are to spread a blue cloth and put on it the plates, dishes and bowls, and the jars for drink offerings; the bread that is continually there is to remain on it. Over these they are to spread a scarlet cloth, cover that with hides of sea cows and put its poles in place.

They are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand that is for light, together with its lamps, its wick trimmers and trays, and all its jars for the oil used to supply it. Then they are to wrap it and all its accessories in a covering of hides of sea cows and put it on a carrying frame.

Over the gold altar they are to spread a blue cloth and cover that with hides of sea cows and put its poles in place.

They are to take all the articles used for ministering in the sanctuary, wrap them in a blue cloth, cover that with hides of sea cows and put thme on a carrying frame.

They are to remove the ashes from the bronze altar and spread a purple cloth over it. Then they are to place on it all the utensils used for ministering at the altar, inluding the firepans, meat forks, shovels and sprinkling bowls. Over it they are spread a covering of hides of sea cows and put its poles in place.

After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move, the Kohathites are to come to do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy things or they will die…

O The LORD gave VERY specific instructions to Moses as to how the Tent of Meeting (their church) was to be moved. These people wandered in the desert for 40 years setting up/tearing down camp/church. God wanted them to do their very best in caring for His things. It was so important to Him that people did do their best when serving Him that He gave very specific instructions for them to follow or death would occur.

A How seriously do I take my role(s) in helping at church? Do I wait until the last moment to prepare my lesson for teaching the kids? (most of the time, yes) Do I clean up 1/2-way on Sundays because I just want to get out of there? Am I careful with the items the Lord has blessed the church with; carefully, thoughtfully, and neatly putting them away in their proper way and place(s)? These things may not SEEM that important, but people could spiritually “die” if I don’t take them seriously.

I need to really know my lesson plan well so that I can share from my heart to the kids I teach. They will learn who Jesus is through seeing Him in my heart- not in me reading a lesson plan aloud. I need to clean up with excellence- at the office or at the church- doing my very best to bless those who come after me. I need to take the extra time to care for the items the Lord has given the church, putting them away in their proper containers and in the proper way so that they last and can be used again (and agian).

Where should my heart be? To bless those around me, not to grumble, and to make newcomers as comfortable as possible so that they can freely hear the Good News of Jesus on Sundays. People’s “spiritual” lives are at stake.

P Lord, help me have the right heart in serving you; to do my VERY BEST for your glory. Help me to not grow weary when serving you with the right attitude and heart. Amen!

Right on Nicole, it seems so hard sometimes to take our focus off of ourselves and our own desires (i.e. just wanting to get home after church) when we are serving at the church; that we, mainly ME, can tend to rush and NOT do my best in how I serve the Lord. It’s good to have that perspective that my selfish, fleshly desires affect more than just myself. Good Word, thanks!
