2 Peter 3:11b-12a

S You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.

O Peter reminds the believer to not forget the coming of the Lord. He gives them the warning that others may come and sow doubt about the return of the Lord. Instead Peter wants the believers to remember that God promised the return of the Lord. He reminds the believers that God’s timing is different than ours. A thousand years is like a day to Lord. The Lord is not slow to keep his promise; on the other hand he is patient not wanting any to perish and wanting everyone to come to repentance. No one knows the day of the Lord return but we will certainly know when it does happen. There will be earth shaking events when He comes.

A What stood out to me in this verse was that although God is in control of the events surrounding the return of the Lord, we can still partner with him in speeding it up by how we live our lives. He calls us to devoted lives of holiness and godliness. When we pursue God and live a life that honors him our lives become a witness, a testimony of God’s reality to the world around us. When we are looking forward to his return we also are focused on accomplishing the work of evangelism and discipleship that needs to take place around us.

Another thought, I’ve been thinking about my longing for Him. “Am I ready to see my Savior face to face?” By this I mean, is there something more that desire from life. I can’t think of any one thing materialistic that I would want above him. I would love to have a hot tub or travel Europe, but not above His return and being with Him. For me there is only one thing left… to live for Him and be the man he has called me to be in my home, community and among my friends. I want His fame to grow through my life.

P Lord today I long for your return. And since I long for you I also long for many to come to know you as well. I believe you are the soon and coming King and I pray that the knowledge of your return will help me to live a life that honors you and reaches out to you. I want to see you face to face and know that I have been a faithful servant that longed for his saviors return.
