Protecting the Gift and the Weapon — Jennifer Garner
2 Timothy 2:20
S In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
O Paul is talking to Timothy in this letter, a beloved friend who is like a son to him. He is instructing Timothy on what to hold fast to and what to run from. Just before this scripture, Paul talks about two people in the church who were promoting a false theological view and how it destroyed the faith of several people. In this scripture that follows, he describes two things- noble and ignoble articles. He wants Timothy to stay away from things that are godless and those who promote them (ignoble articles) and he is to pursue what is righteous and everything that is godly (noble articles). Pursuing these things and ridding himself of wickedness will make him useful to the master. Allowing ungodly things to remain in his life will only cause destruction.
A It amazes me some of the things I have heard people say in relation to theology and scripture. I think to myself “I don’t remember the bible saying that!” or “I think you need to research that scripture again”. The word of God is both a gift and a weapon. It is a gift because it transforms my very soul and brings me closer to Him, and it is a powerful weapon that, when wielded, protects against the enemy and anything that would lead me away from the Lord. Unfortunately, it will only protect me to the degree that I allow it to. How will I be able to recognize false doctrine if I don’t know Gods word? How can my life change if I’m not allowing the Word to penetrate it? Every thought, theory, and deed should be tested by Gods word. The only way this can happen is if I know the word and I know how to use it correctly. Knowing what is pure and right and recognizing what is not will keep me from two things: allowing myself to be mislead and misleading others. This verse is a charge to me to protect what is right in the Lord.
P Lord, your word is precious and powerful; help me it keep it pure in my heart so when I pass it on it stays pure.
In Your Name, Amen
Love Jen

Cool, journal. I think it goes well with mine today (2 Tim 3:16-17) where Paul takes describes how Scripture is useful. I need to know His word and be guided by His spirit in that word. Thank you.

Yeah jenny that is true! When I am in His word, I cant help but becoming more in line with how He wants my life to be. Getting rid of the ignoble is something I see Him doing all the time as I soak in His words to me. It’s like–I open up the word, read and journal and then BAAM! I just cant help but come away feeling like some of the ignoble has been aknowledged and dealt with–leaving me with new life, guidance and clarity of what God wants from me.

AMEN! On days that I am not in the Word, I feel “dicombobulated”
(great word, huh?). Things just don’t go quite right. I need Him so desperately to speak Truth into my life, and in turn, into others.
