God Is In Control — Blake Pierson

S Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

O No one is given a position of authority unless God has chosen them. All power resides with God. God chooses people to have authority, but people decide whether or not they will glorify God with the authority that has been given them. Paul does state in vs. 3 that a person of authority will use their power for good by punishing evil. There is no consideration given for a person of authority who abuses their power. This can be unsettling, and frustrating.

A This kind of a verse brings me to a place where I have a couple decisions to make:

  1. Will I trust God’s judgment implicitly knowing that He is in control? It is clear in the Bible that people of authority will be judged by a higher standard. Obviously God cares about how people use their authority. I want to trust God’s selection and timing when it comes to who is in authority in this world, and even closer in my life.
  2. Will I pray when I see injustice and abuse of authority? I’m so thankful that God has given me a supernatural weapon to bring about change on earth through the gift of prayer. I’m thankful that God’s heart is to bring about His Kingdom where people who lead are led themselves by the fruit of the Holy Spirit. I want to be aware of the difference that I can make by praying when I hear of or see social injustice.

P God help me to trust your heart, your selection of leaders, and also your timing when injustice seems to take place. Please help remind me to be active in my prayer, aware of the part that I can play in bringing YOUR Kingdom to earth.

    Blake,
Right on! This is good stuff…no really, these are almost never my first 2 responses, but when you lay it out so simply and humbly, it makes perfect sense. Just the reminder that I needed.

Thanks for your entry Blake. I have a hard time myself when I see people, especially leaders in the church, abuse their power. I know it grieves the Lord when leaders in the body of Christ are unfaithful and abusive to their families or become addicted to money and what comes with it…It is not that we don’t all have those temptations, but Jesus calls those of us who lead and disciple to a higher level of accountability. People in the world see all that and say “LOOK…they are no different than us.” Any wonder that divorce rates are the same for the church and the non church? And it IS walking daily with the Lord in a prayer filled life and having trustworthy brothers and sisters we can share our REAL struggles with to keep on that straight and narrow path. It is a joy to watch you walk with Jesus and it is evident that he is your Lord…Thanks for serving our kids so faithfully.
