Totally Committed — Aaron Dressler

Matthew 4:19-20

S “Come, follow me ” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

O The call to discipleship is definite and demands a response of total commitment. Peter and Simon (Andrew) had previous knowledge of Jesus prior to his command to follow him. Their hearts must have been ready and burning with desire to serve prior to this encounter with Jesus, as they immediately dropped their nets, left the boats and gave their lives to be disciples for men. Fishing was their profession and livelihood; they were willing to give all of that up.

A What type of commitment have I made to God? Jesus has called us to be disciples for Him. We need to be totally committed to this calling, willing to sacrifice areas of our lives to follow him. The challenge is to adopt the heart of evangelism, so we can be “fishers of men” and to raise others up to be disciples for Him.

P Jesus, thank you for the example you gave us as we pursue the calling/mandate you gave us to be disciples of men. Allow us to be Spirit led as we look to raise up those around us to be disciples for you. Give us the ability to be fully committed to you and show us areas of our lives where we need to give them to you in order to fulfill this calling You have placed on our lives.

Amen

You are so right! You are a great model of servant evangelism, Aaron. You have been willing to give up so much for the sake of the Call; and God has blessed you abundantly for it. I want to be like you “when I grow up”.

Jesus uniquely calls us out of this world. He reaches us in so many differnt ways. What does not change is the response he cals us to. We can not truely follow the Lord unless we obey him and be willing to follow him in total abandonment.

Jesus said follow me and, boom, they “dropped everthing” they knew in life. Christ is standing with us right now asking us to drop everything and follow him yet we try to follow him while holding on to our nets also. We are so dumb not to realize that the blessings come when we fully sacrifice ALL and not just hear his request but listen to his plea. That last part of this scripture is so incredibly powerful…”At once they left their nets and followed him.” Oh, how I long to be a disciple who is capable of leaving it ALL behind.
