Unworthy — Michael Calabrese
Luke 7:6-7
S So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: ‘Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.’
O
This is part of the story of Jesus and the Centurion. The centurion hears about Jesus and does not feel he or his house is worthy of Jesus to come to. Yet the centurion’s call for Jesus was not for himself, but for his servant.
Jesus is willing to go to him and his house. Jesus knows the man the centurion is. The centurion shows his faith and understanding of Jesus’ authority. If it is commanded it will be done.
Jesus does command it, and he explains how the centurion’s faith is unmatched by his peers.
A How man times have I felt myself unworthy? How many times have I sinned? Is this not how the centurion felt. Jesus knows me, just like he knew Simon and Mary with the alabaster jar. I may be unworthy but Jesus will come. If I focus beyond myself to other, he will come. His thought will help those I offer help to. His thought can heal me as well.
P Jesus, thank you. Forgive my unworthiness and help me focus on those around me that need your help. Come to me even though I am filled with the junk of this world.
Help me exercise your commands for me. Jesus you are my king, free to command me. Thank you for your patience.
Blessed is your name. Amen.

What a great observation! It’s so easy for me to focus on my own “junk” and not focus on how God wants to use me in others’ lives!

Hi Michael, We are all unworthy, aren’t we? Your words encourage me to get past my human failings and continue to invite the healing presence of Jesus to come “under my roof.” I’m so glad we have the hope of God cleansing all the junk of the world out of our hearts and minds through His word and His Spirit. I’m sorry I missed journaling on Thursday, I thought it had been changed to Wednesday this week, not next!
